Hi and welcome to my Blog, my name is Paul Riddle and I live in south Leicestershire, UK. Back in August 2007 my quest began to locate as many local Little Owl territories as possible. The driving force was a reported decline in the uk numbers so I thought I would do my bit and conduct a study in my area. After 7 years and countless hours out in the field I have detected over 200 different sites. With a thirst for a greater understanding of the owls a more comprehensive monitoring and nest box programme then commenced. This also now includes monitoring the local and very sparse population of Barn Owls, please pop back occasionally and catch up with the life and times of my owls and any other wildlife that I come across. I hope you enjoy your visit!!!

Too cold today!

The weather here in Leicestershire has been abysmal during the last couple of days, consequently I haven't bothered to venture out. Instead I have been doing some long overdue tidying up of my photo archives, whilst doing this I came across loads of images that for what ever reason I didn't get around to processing or posting.

Amongst all of those unprocessed images were a couple of images that I'd like to share, below. There is just something about Little Owls and dry stone walls that I particularly like, they just seem to complement each other so well.

I also found a group of flight shots of the owl as it moved along the wall. With the use of my photoshop editing soft wear I have merged them altogether to create this sequence.

I have every intention to get out later today, that is if the weather warms up and I can be bothered!

  1. Hi Paul, Quick question for you whilst it's quiet ;-)

Earlier in the year I moved house and now live a couple of doors down from an old church where a Tawny owl roosts. I quite often hear it at night or when I set off for work early (6am) but this morning I could still hear it calling at 8:30am.

Is daytime calling got any significance or can that be expected from time to time ?

    Thanks,

    Andy.

    1. Hi again Andy,

The Tawny is the earliest breeder of the british owls and I would have thought that at this time of year the daytime calling is associated with it establishing its territory. Maybe someone else has an idea?

Do you ever see the owlin the daytime? I would be very interested in knowing of this location, maybe you could send me an email giving me some more details.

      All the best for now.........Paul.

  3. That flight shot is great!

These pictures would work well for Wild Bird Wednesday that runs on my blog on (!) Wednesday - Richard Pegler is a regular poster.
